Wichita is the biggest city in the state of Kansas in the midwestern region of the US. While it’s not as popular as the larger cities in neighboring states like Denver, Colorado or St Louis, Missouri, it more than holds its own. You may not think it, but there’s a lot of great things to do in Wichita. The city is well known for its aviation background, being the home and base for some of the world’s most innovative aviators. As well as being proud of its history, Witchita is also a modern and forward-thinking city. Its commitment to science and discovery can be viewed in its futuristic Exploration Place museum. The facility is home to the largest Planetarium in Kansas. It’s a fully interactive space for children to learn about the many wonders of the science world.

Wichita’s desire to save, rehabilitate and breed endangered species is on full display at Sedwick Zoo. Animals from across the world are cared for here and the zoo is a wonderful educational space. It’s here you can learn about animals’ diet, homes, and lives, in a safe and interactive environment. Sedwick Zoo is the number one rated attraction in the state of Kansas. If you’re more a fan of animals that are already extinct, the Museum of World Treasures has a raft of fossilized beasts to see. These include dinosaurs and the main highlight, Ivan the Tyrannosaurus Rex, is incredibly popular with children. Also on display at the museum are many historical artifacts, such as documents signed by former US Presidents. There are also various vintage weapons and exhibits from the First and Second World War.

If you have an interest in architecture, Exploration Place will give you an insight into futuristic designs. On the other side of town, the Allen House will introduce you to the visionary work one of America’s architectural legends: Frank Lloyd Wright. The home, which is now a museum, was designed by Wright for Henry Allen, a former Kansas Governor. The property is open to the public for tours and shouldn’t be missed if you’re visiting Wichita.

Lovers of flowers, gardening, and all things outdoors can spend time at Wichita Botanical Gardens. Set over 17 acres of land, there’s a huge range of plant and flower species in a series of themed gardens. Other excellent outdoor spaces in the city are the Pawnee Prairie Park, OJ Watson Park, and Sedgwick County Park. All are beautiful areas for walking, hiking, fishing and enjoying the surrounding countryside.

Because Wichita isn’t as famous as other midwestern cities, it’s one of the more cheap cities to vacation in across the United States. This makes it a great destination for families looking for a city break that won’t break the bank. Younger couples who want to try something different but need to stick to a budget will enjoy the range of cultural activities. Witchita has a lot to offer, so get in quick before everyone else does.
