Besides Swedish, Shiatsu and Reflexology, Deep Tissue is probably the next most famous massage technique that many people go for. Why is that so and how does it differ from other massage techniques?

Before we delve into it, let’s briefly describe what a deep tissue massage is, given it can sound rather intimidating especially if you don’t know what’s involved. Unlike other massage techniques that focus on relaxation, deep tissue massage actually aims to treat muscle pain and improve stiffness.

Typically involving the application of sustained pressure on the deeper and inner layers of muscle and surrounding connective tissues, deep tissue massage aims to reduce tension in muscles and tissues as well as t break up scar tissue that forms following an injury.

Yes, this is a common treatment for those who had sustained an injury because it promotes faster healing (with the increase of blood flow and reduction of inflammation). So much so that there had been studies likening its effects to those of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs i.e. Advil.

So yes, while this method can be a little bit uncomfortable for some, it is a good idea to give this method a try if you suffer from any tight muscles or medical conditions – because of these three major benefits:

  1. Reduce Inflammation

Inflammation is usually the cause for joint or muscle pain. When you sustain an injury, such inflammation gets worse and this is why you feel even more painful. Deep tissue massage techniques help alleviate these symptoms by using slow but focused massage on the problematic area to increase blood flow and improve circulation.

Do not expect to have your symptoms cured in one session only though – it usually requires many sessions before you can get rid of it once and for all. This is why it is better if you have a massage chair at home because the cost of a professional masseur’s do add up down the road.

Nevertheless, you can expect to feel a release in you tight muscles after your first session before a few later ones completely remove them. If you want to maintain them healthy and tension free in the future, it may be necessary to have these massages regularly.

  1. Relieve Stiff Joints

Stiff joints can be very painful. While age is the primary reason, lifestyle choices like diet and weight can also impact joint mobility. Medical conditions such as arthritis, lupus and bursitis are also common reasons you will find joints feeling stiff and painful.

Because deep tissue massage is designed to realign the deep muscle layers and connecting tissues, you will feel the pain dissipate in as little as 24 hours after receiving one (although it may cause discomfort at first). You can think of it as the use of many traditional Swedish massage techniques but with the added benefit of more troubled areas being focused on.

  1. Improve Medical Conditions

And yes, deep tissue massage cnan help reduce or eliminate symptoms from many medical conditions. Aside from the aforementioned, conditions like muscle spasms, fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis sufferers have also found major relief and lasting results from regular deep tissue massage therapy.

So that’s that – the three major benefits of deep tissue massage and why it is so popular among users worldwide.

One thing to note though, is that while there may be some sort of discomfort (given that the treatment is to break up muscle tension, adhesions and scar tissue that often lie in deeper musculature), deep tissue massage isn’t supposed to be painful. You should expect to experience some stiffness and soreness the day following your massage though.

If you suffer from any tight muscles or medical conditions, this is a good way to find relief. Other common ailments that find exceptional results include:

  • Fibromyalgia
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • High blood pressure
  • Sciatica
  • Tennis elbow
  • Lower back pain
  • Postural difficulties
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Repetitive strain injuries (e.g. carpal tunnel syndrome)
  • Injury rehabilitation and athletic recovery
  • Chronic muscle pain

Go to a massage parlour and let your massage therapist know where your problematic areas are. Or if you have a massage chair at home like we mentioned above, that’s even better – just choose the deep tissue massage program and target it at the area that needs it most (if your chair lets you do just that).
