Cosmetic tattoos have become increasingly in demand these days. Just like there are many ways of tattoo implantation, there are many methods of tattoo removal including laser tattoo removal, dermabrasion, radiofrequency ablation, surgical methods, chemical peels, and Q-switched lasers. For patients who can’t afford to pay hefty costs of laser treatment, both dermabrasion, and radiofrequency work well.

This page has been designed to study the effectiveness of dermabrasion and radiofrequency ablation for tattoo removal.

According to a study done on 20 patients with tattoos, two groups were formed with 10patients each. In group 1, tattoo removal was done using dermabrasion and in group II patients, radiofrequency ablation was used to remove tattoos,

The results showed that 50% of group 1 patients and 40% of group 2 reported more than 80% reduction in tattoo pigmentation. 51-75% reduction in tattoo pigmentation was reported in 40% of patients in both groups. 26-50% reduction was seen in 10% patients in group I and 20% in group II.

About the post-procedure complications, 10% in group 1 and 5% in group 2 reported hypertrophic scar formation. 5% of patients in group 1 and 5% in group 2 reported hyperpigmented skin, 5% in group 1 and 10% in group 2 reported incomplete pigment removal. 20% in group 1 and 10% in group 2 reported pain and swelling. 35% in group 1 and 10% in group 2 reported bearable scar formation.

The tattoo removal business has skyrocketed over the years following the increased demand for tattoo implantation around the world. Surgery and laser removal are some of the trending tattoo removal technologies but both of them have their drawbacks. Surgery is advised by doctors for clients with small tattoos and it can leave a permanent scar. Laser is a bit painful and there is no guarantee of the effectiveness? Both of these procedures are expensive and can empty pockets. Not all individuals looking for tattoo removal can afford these technologies. Some individuals are in search of cost-effective solutions to tattoo removal. Those individuals look for procedures that are easier, and cheaper and can be done at home or by local people. There are so many unauthorized websites available on the Internet offering various tattoo removal tricks.

There are various techniques including surgical excision; dermabrasion and lasers. To remove tattoos permanently from the skin, most individuals prefer q- switched laser treatment. This treatment breaks down the tattoo ink pigments into powder which gets absorbed by the body’s immune system. Multiple sessions are required to complete the tattoo removal through laser technology. Even history results prove that tattoo removal using tissue-destructive techniques like dermabrasion, cryosurgery, electro-surgery and surgical excision remove the tattoo ink, but these treatments often leave scar and skin pigmentation changes.

Dermabrasion is one of the proven tattoo removal treatments. But there are different types of tattoos and some of them are so hard that they can’t be easily removed. Professional tattoos are comparatively easier to remove. In dermabrasion treatment, doctors try to remove the outer layer of the skin using a wire brush or a scalpel. Dermabrasion enhances the growth of new collagen and skin tissue. The wound healing process after this treatment takes two weeks, but a patient may see some redness surrounding the treated area for up to three months.

The radiofrequency ablation technique works differently. As the name suggests, this technology uses the electromagnetic wave and transmits the waves using an electrode to produce vibration in the molecules of the tissues connecting it. In this process, only tissues that come in contact with the electrode are ablated, less harm is done to the skin tissues adjacent to the area that is not in contact with the electrode. One of the advantages of the radiofrequency ablation method is that each deep-seated ink pigment can be removed without harming adjacent normal tissues between each pigment.

Wrap up: Radiofrequency ablation is an effective, cost-effective, precise, and reliable way of tattoo removal. Radiofrequency (RF) surgery involves electromagnetic waves at the frequency of 1.5 to 4.5 MHz. In the case of skin treatment, the most commonly used frequency is 3.8 MHz.The advantage of this radiofrequency is faster healing.
