After fishing in saltwater or waterways that feature algae, be sure to rinse your reel in freshwater before you store it. Furthermore, remove the line periodically to clean the reel. When you do clean the reel, permit it to dry overnight. Once the line is off the reel, soak it in nonabrasive soap and water. In addition, use a soft cloth to wipe down the line. You should then rinse it with clean water.
To clean the reel, unscrew the handle by turning it counterclockwise. Some handles may be attached with a screw, so be prepared to unscrew the attachment with your fingers. Spritz the reel’s exterior with a lubricating spray. Then, wipe it down with paper towels. The next step is to unscrew the reel’s interior screws. Be sure to assess the placement of the screws for reassembly and remove the plate. You should now be able to see the gears. With a cotton swab, clean away any visible dirt and debris. You can also use a small amount of lubricating spray on the gears. Reel grease is another safe lubricating substance that you can use on the gears. Once the gears are oiled and clean, you can put the reel back together. Be sure to store your fishing equipment in a cool, dry area.
