We live in the world of communication, where communication can be defined as “the activity or process of expressing ideas and feelings, and of delivering information to people.” Communication occurs through language and comes in two different forms, namely, written and spoken. The ability to communicate in a language reflects personality, self-image and knowledge of the world, the ability to reason, and the skills to express thoughts in real time. In the context of today’s world, due to the global trend of internationalization, the ability to communicate in English is considered an essential skill. Today’s English is the global standard in communication. You need to socialize, have better communication, or listen to someone’s tone of voice that makes you understand more clearly what they are trying to say. However, it is not always an easy task for people who use English as a second language to be able to speak at the level as native speakers. They must have a perfect understanding of the phonetics of English, have a good understanding of the appropriate vocabulary and be able to put words together intelligently and without hesitation to form comprehensible sentences. In addition, they also have to perceive what is said to them and must be able to respond appropriately to establish environmental relationships or achieve their communicative objective. In other words, comprehension skills are vital for effective communication in English. Non-native English speakers often encounter these barriers and are subject to general mistakes. Also, from a memory of my personal experience, there have been many occasions that caused embarrassment and poor communication due to imperfect command of English.
English spoken communication is a vital selection parameter for many job roles today. Profiles like sales, customer service, office jobs require good general English speaking skills regardless of sectors or industries. Many deserving candidates lose their jobs because they may not be as good at speaking English.
Key elements that impede effective communication in English include insufficient knowledge of grammatical skills, unorganized reading and comprehension skills, poor vocabulary and phonetics. The influence of the mother tongue is also an important deterrent to mastering the art of spoken English for many.
