Prospects and challenges of workplace diversity of Walmart in modern-day organizations

Introduction:

Diversity plays an important role in the success of an organisation and diversity management helps in making the deliberate efforts by the leaders within the organisation in selecting and retaining the diverse talent through supportive activities. It is important for the organisations to promote an inclusive workplace that would have the ability to integrate values and equality among the employees to connect and respect every individual. This report would focus on establishing the commitment of the renowned American retailer, Walmart towards diversity and the management of the ethical culture in countries like Africa. Development plans regarding the managers and leaders would also be established for the benefit of the company.

Information about your company reflecting on organisational commitment to diversity:

The mission of Walmart remains to help people save more money with their daily equipment in order to provide a better living. The slogan of Walmart thus highlights, “Save money. Live Better”. Thus, the focus on strategy remains at a low price to attract people (Walmart, 2021). The vision is equally customer-centric which is to be the ultimate destination for the customers where they can save money irrespective of the ways they would want to shop. The commitment and success of Walmart lie in the legacy of the founder Sam Walton who believed that great service is equally important as low prices and thus involved all the associates in the vision of the company (Walmart, 2021). He has established strong values of companionship and has dedicated the company towards the betterment of the communities which led him to expand in various countries to enhance the commitment towards further diversity and inclusion.

In order to further portray the commitment towards diversity by Walmart, the Culture, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion report of 2020 highlights that the U.S workforce has 1.4 million associates among which 21% is African Americans, 17% LatinX, 5% Asian American and 5% American Indian(Walmart, 2021). This is entirely a mixed workforce where 55% are women, highlighting the efficiency diversity practice.

Ways of Inclusion of staff in the United States and in the African country of expansion:

In the United States, Walmart has been successful in including effective diversity. In order to enhance the rate of inclusion of the staff in terms of expansion, Walmart can include several ways. First, the representation of diversity would need to be increased. There has been a steep increase in the representation of the LatinX and Asian staff over the few years but effective cultural training should be practised in order to include the differences in culture and accept the thoughts and views that other cultures have to offer(Walmart, 2021). Inclusion is diversity has been an international element for Walmart to introduce expansion. There has been a campaign by Walmart Mexico and Walmart America by establishing a partnership with local organisations in order to keep all the staff belonging from different communities safe and feel included with equal treatment and respect (Walmart, 2021). This has been an important step in raising the importance of diversity within Walmart and facilitating expansion strategy through inclusion.

For the expansion in the African countries, the staff inclusion ways would need to be different as the culture shared by the African people are highly contrasting to the Western culture. The promotion of togetherness and respect towards the culture is very high among the people of Africa. There would also be a barrier of language and the limitation of knowledge due to limited education facilities within the country. Walmart has been successful in introducing a “Graduate Development Programme” for the qualified and inexperienced graduates to be trained with practical lectures and training for better work experience that would help them to relate with the proceedings and requirements of the organisation(Walmart, 2013). This would further eliminate the gap of culture and language and would facilitate the process of smooth expansion.
