In the case of desiring to see the baby in your womb, technology provides us with a medical ultrasound. What is it anyway? A medical ultrasound is a technique that uses image base from the application of the ultrasound. It’s an imaging method that gets information from high-frequency sound waves that produces images of structures within our body. It provides valuable information that helps doctors diagnose and even treat diseases and conditions.

So maybe, you are now being nervous because this is your first time to experience it. But you need not to worry now, because here, we list down the things that will happen during the whole ultrasound session.

Before the Session

The first thing that the nurse or your doctor will tell you is to remove your jewelries and accessories. Some of your clothes might also ask to be removed and replace it with a gown. Then, you will lie on the examination table. This time, you might have a mixed feelings of nervousness and excitement, but you should relax yourself and believe that everything is going to be ok.

During the Session

As you are lying down on the examination table, a gel will applied to your skin over the area being examined. The purpose of it is to help prevent air pockets that could possibly block the sound waves that will project the images. You don’t need to worry about removing this gel, because this is easy to remove by clothing. Now, a sonographer or the trained technician will handheld the transducer against the area being examined and revolves it as needed to capture images. This transducer is the one who will send sound waves into your skin and will collect the sounds that will bounce back, until it captures the images.

The ultrasound is painless. However, you might experience mild discomfort as the transducer is inserted in your body.

Waiting for the Results

An ultrasound exam usually takes thirty-minutes to one hour. After the examinations, a doctor will examine your result and send it to your official doctor. Don’t forget that you are also entitled to see the results.
