So what is an aerial drone roof survey and why can it help Building and Chartered Surveyors?
If you are a Surveyor, you need information about a building to provide an accurate report for your client. This is where a drone survey gives you vital data about the condition of the roof, the structure and the environment of both residential and industrial sites.
Drones have already changed how many businesses operate, reducing their budget, making them more time efficient and most importantly improving safety
Using a drone (or UAV – Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) to survey any land or structure is a versatile, economical and flexible method of collating photographic information. The results not only give a wide picture of the location but more importantly provide intimate detail of the condition.
Any building surveyors report is worth its weight in gold for the client who asks for a condition report, structural survey, dilapidation report, home buyers report, valuation survey, end of lease condition report and many others.
When using a drone for photogrammetry work accuracy could be equated by using the GSD, or Ground Sample Distance which is a measurement between two consecutive points or pixels, so depending on the resolution of the on board camera can determine the GSD.
If the image sensor can achieve 3cm/pixel then each pixel equates to 3 centimetres on the ground. Using various applications almost any distance can be measure in either 2D or 3D space!
Drone surveying has so many advantages over traditional surveying methods with safety being the most obvious. There is no more scaling of ladders, setting up huge scaffold towers and arranging crane and raising platforms to be available on site.
This reflects in the cost of suppling data to the client, usually you’ll find the drone survey is better for the environment. As well as logistically speaking with fewer polluting potentials, as drones operate from renewable energy (electricity).
There are many different types of drone inspection/survey available: Confined spaces inspection, to reach inaccessible places capturing accurate geo-spatial data.
2D Orth mosaic Surveys are stitched images assembled into a single image, ortho-photos enable surveyors to perform accurate measurements from specified distance and surface points enabling the surveyor to make 3D models and animations – built from a series of photographs and converted into a computer model that can be manipulated and added to for future construction projects.

Multispectral data to gather information for Agriculture and crop management. Capturing both invisible and visible wavelengths of light, drones surveys can measure crop growth, giving an indication of the local environmental situations. So leading to proactive methods of production which can increase yield, stop pest infestation and improve land management.
This technology makes use of a laser to light a target, it measures the reflected light back to the sensor. If this process is repeated with a constant stream of data a point cloud can then be generated. Once post processed in various application and other software you can achieve a very accurate site measurement that can otherwise be determined using photogrammetry.

Town and urban planners use drones to collect large amounts of data efficiently and quickly using less operatives. Acquired data produced allows planners to estimate social and local environmental conditions so that further planning can be modelled for greater social models creating local benefits.
Property managers require aerial images for documenting the existing state of property for insurance purposes. These images are also used for the development of the property.
