Non-woven wallpaper for painting is a finishing material for walls, which in its intended purpose can easily be confused with paintable non-woven wallpaper, glass wallpaper or glass cloth. In this article, we will tell you what its differences are, what properties it has and how to use the material correctly.
What is non-woven wallpaper
Flizelin is a semi-synthetic material consisting of paper and polyester fibers. The fibers are chemically modified, but at the same time environmentally friendly. Due to the modification, the fibers have greater tensile strength and abrasion resistance, compared to plain paper.
Non-woven wallpaper for painting is multi-layered. This is the main difference from paintable non-woven wallpaper and other materials for painting. No careful preparation of the wall is required for gluing. It is enough for the wall to be relatively smooth, without deep potholes. The remaining defects will help to hide the canvases themselves.

In addition to the base, non-woven wallpaper has a decorative layer, most often made of vinyl. It is produced using the “hot stamping” or “foaming” technology.
Hot stamping is a method of creating a relief surface of wallpaper. The wallpaper is first heated in a special oven. Due to the high temperature, the vinyl applied to the non-woven fabric becomes flexible. After that, the canvas passes through an embossing roller. On it, the surface of the wallpaper acquires different textures.
Thanks to this production technology, the wallpaper is dense and resistant to mechanical damage.
Foaming – a special composition is applied to the non-woven base. When the canvas passes through a high-temperature oven, the composition enters into a chemical reaction and becomes similar to foam. Due to this, the wallpaper gets a pronounced relief. By applying the composition using a special technology, canvases with various textures and patterns are produced.
Wallpaper produced using this technology is less durable than hot stamping. However, the foamed pattern hides wall defects better than the embossed one.
The variety of textures of paintable wallpaper is not inferior to interior ones.
Properties of non-woven wallpaper
Non-woven wallpaper has a number of competitive advantages.
Elasticity . Wallpaper on a non-woven base stretches. This property is especially important in new buildings, where the first few years after construction the house will shrink. This will not prevent the formation of microcracks in the walls and ceiling, but they will not be visible under the stretchable non-woven wallpaper.
Shrinkage-free . After gluing, the sheets do not shrink. Due to this, the seam at the junction of the wallpaper does not stretch. This greatly simplifies installation and improves the appearance of the finishing coating.
Applying glue to the wall . Unlike other wallpapers, to glue non-woven wallpapers, it is enough to apply glue only to the wall. It is important to use special glue for non-woven wallpapers. Other wallpaper glue will not cope with this task and after gluing the canvases will either simply peel off or “bubble”.
Density . As we have said before, regardless of the production method, non-woven wallpaper is dense and textured enough to hide flaws on the walls. Which, in turn, paper wallpaper or paintable non-woven wallpaper cannot do.
Re-paintable . If at some point you want to do some renovations and change the color of the walls, you won’t have to remove the old wallpaper. Non-woven canvases can be re-painted right over the old paint.
In addition to a number of advantages, non-woven wallpaper also has disadvantages. The decorative vinyl coating does not allow air to pass through well. To prevent mold from appearing under the canvases over time, ensure good ventilation. Or use non-woven wallpaper only in rooms with normal humidity.
Wallpaper care
There are models that can withstand dry cleaning only. This is enough to refresh the look of the walls. Although non-woven fabric does not attract dust, dirt can accumulate on wallpaper with deep embossing. To clean such wallpaper, use a dry cloth.
