Cheap barbecue is great. Cheap Korean barbecue is something a little different and fun when you want to mix it up a bit. Your girlfriend / boyfriend / “life partner” will love it!
My best suggestion is that before you really try to make a Korean barbecue, go to a nice and cheap Korean barbecue place in your town when you have a chance and experience for yourself. There are almost two options in the places I have been to. You have your dishes prepared in the kitchen, like your stir fries and soups. The staff will seat you at a table and take your order and bring it to you. The other option is for the staff to sit at a table with a barbecue plate in the middle. Then you order your raw marinated meat and cook it yourself at the table.
To get a really good idea of the whole experience, I suggest you go a lot of times so that you can really understand what it is all about. Any excuse to keep coming back is good enough for me. Also, be sure to go with some friends. In the end, they’ll probably encourage you to host a Korean night or something.
I personally fell in love with the whole Korean food experience when I met my Korean friend “Colin”. I was in baseball and visiting Australia at the time. I took him to some games and thought I’d take him to a Korean restaurant so he felt a little bit like home and could try it out. Thereafter, every week after baseball practice we went directly to dinner there. Since then, I think I’ve introduced more people to Korean food than any recommend the cold noodle dish.
What convinced me to do it myself was some photos he showed me of his grandparents living in the mountains somewhere. The whole family was sitting on the floor around a large wood-burning barbecue with all kinds of meat and other things. Everyone was pecking at the food with chopsticks and they looked very happy. I thought “This is what I want to do”.
I have had a lot of experience with many different types of barbecues. Korean does not only incorporate the kitchen or the social part. It totally puts the two together and involves everyone.
