The intensities for blue diamonds are light blue, fancy light blue, fancy blue, fancy dark blue, fancy deep blue, and fancy vivid blue. The most ever paid per carat for a blue diamond was $1,321,590 for a 6.04-carat diamond sold in 2008 at Sotheby’s which came to a total of $7,981,835!

The Most Famous
Every natural fancy colored diamond color has a “most famous” diamond. In the natural blue diamond category, the most famous diamond is the Hope Diamond. At 45.52 carats, this fascinating jewel has found its home in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington,D.C.

Where are they Found
The majority of blue diamonds have been produced in India since approximately 400 B.C. Today, however, most of the diamonds we recognize to be natural blue diamonds come from South African and Australian mines. The Premier Mine, for example, is a mine in South Africa that is known as the mine that produces the most significant amount of blue diamonds in the world. Only a few new blue stones reach even the most distinguished diamond dealers each year. As a result, the prices for fancy natural blue diamonds are soaring.

Though blue, as well as pink diamonds, are very rare, they are gaining tremendous popularity. Not only are they breathtakingly beautiful, but they are also valuable and a wise investment. It is difficult to find a natural fancy blue diamond, especially one of a respectable size, but it is not impossible. Smaller stones are easier to come by and more affordable.
