Can an Erectile Dysfunction Interfere with Pregnancy?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a sexual disorder in which more than 70% of men are unable to achieve or maintain an erection necessary for satisfactory sexual intercourse.

Erectile dysfunction is a serious condition, but modern research methods have shown that most cases are caused by organic conditions. If nocturnal erections are observed, a psychological cause can be assumed.

It is now known that erectile dysfunction is often a precursor to more serious diseases and should therefore always be referred to a doctor.

There are many different causes of erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction affects many men. In Germany alone, around 4.5 million men between the ages of 30 and 80 suffer from erectile dysfunction, which is about 20 percent of the population in this age group. The older a man is, the more likely he is to have an erectile dysfunction – ranging from just 2-3% at the age of 30 to more than 50% at the age of 70 or older.

The assumption that there are two separate causes (organic and psychological) is now obsolete. Erectile dysfunction has a wide range of causes, including biological, psychological, interpersonal and cultural. Psychological causes are more common in young and middle-aged people, and biological causes become more common with age. From the age of 50 onward, 80% of erectile dysfunction is thought to have a physical cause.

The psychological cause is usually a man’s fear of sexual failure. This fear is often linked to relationship conflicts, such as separation from a partner, self-doubt, failure at work or pressure to have children.

Organic causes include:

  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Tobacco
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Varicose veins
  • Surgery or injury to the penis
  • Damage to the spinal cord
  • Blockages in the nipple area
  • Medicines containing neuroleptic substances, such as anti-epileptics or antidepressants.
  • In rare cases, testosterone deficiency
