Veneer or laminate is a shell made of tooth-colored material that is designed, produced, and glued on the teeth, especially the front teeth. This shell is like an eye lens. Laminate veneers are made in different ways, with different techniques, and with different materials. One type of veneer is composite. Dental composites have different kinds and are not very expensive. Due to their lower resistance and color, they are cheaper than ceramic or porcelain. Some of the composites are cheap because they are made in not-so-reputable companies. Some have much better quality. Impress Ivoclar Vivadent is one of the best and most essential composites in cosmetic dentistry. The next types of veneers are ceramics or porcelain. The type and quality of the porcelain veneers and the technique used in making the veneer can be very different.

Problems of Dental Veneers

Sometimes patients and non-specialists cannot recognize what type of veneer is attached to the patient’s teeth. So, it is not easy to determine what kind of laminate is in the patient’s mouth. Another problem is that the side effects of cheap veneers are manifested months or two to three years after applying. So, until months later, the patient will not be able to recognize the differences. Less durability, discoloration, and color instability will appear within months of applying cheaper types. So, just by looking at the images or the appearance of a laminate, one cannot judge the value or price.

The condition of the natural tooth on which the veneer rests is essential. If the patient has broken tooth, decayed or cracked, or has severe discoloration, the condition may be different from that of a healthy but slightly discolored tooth. Sometimes, the teeth are in good order, and the only problem is the color of the teeth or the modification of details such as the shape of the corners or edges of the teeth to be corrected with dental veneers. Sometimes, not only the color or shape of the teeth themselves is problematic, but the way they are placed in the jaw is irregular and unusual. In such cases, laminate construction requires more precision and skill, takes more time and costs more. Therefore, a face-to-face examination, or multiple images from different angles, is necessary to determine the best type of laminate suitable for the patient. Sometimes, x-rays are also used to understand caries, cracks, or roots. The teeth should be treated before applying veneers.

Post-Dental Veneer Care

-After applying veneers, the patient should beware of cold and hot liquids when drinking, because the veneer is sensitive to sudden changes in temperature.

 – S/he should avoid over-use of coffee and tea that may cause discoloration.

-Biting or chewing hard food should be avoided, such as apples, raw carrots, nuts, and more.

-Regular and daily oral hygiene is essential, including brushing the teeth, using dental floss, and mouthwash.

-Tobacco and smoking also cause discoloration and should be avoided.

-Regular checkups to the emergency dentist are recommended.
