Sports clubs are plentiful across many communities in the UK, and there’s no doubt that all their members are drawn together by their passion for their sport. But sports clubs do more than just allow like-minded individuals to play their favourite sport and perhaps enhance their sports prowess. It also gives them a sense of belonging, a sense of comradeship and camaraderie that no other pursuit can deliver. It brings together people and communities, and, for sure, it’s a great way for people to stay physically active and in good shape. If you have been thinking about starting a sports club for a while but are hesitant about taking the leap simply because you feel that you don’t have enough information, here’s your best guide to starting and organising your own sports club or team.

Sort out your reasons

First things first, sort out your reasons for wanting to start a sports club. You want to be sure about your decision.  Do you want to start a club so that other players of the same age as you can stay active? Do you want to start a club to give young people in your community a chance to improve their skills and spend their time productively? Once you figure out your reasons, it will help you manage your club in the best way – and even make it possible for you to go on even when you encounter difficulties (and believe us, there may be more than a few).

Dedicate time

Starting your sports club requires a lot of time, and you need to dedicate an ample amount of time to it. This is true whether you decide to get a coach or hire a manager or do everything yourself – you should have enough time so you can work on your sports club and make it a success. It’s not just dedicating time for practices, either – it’s also about showing up for tournaments, organizing matches with other clubs, managing your daily operations and more besides.

Determine your finances

Another important element of starting a sports club is deciding where your finances will be coming from – in other words, determine your finances. How will you get funding? You will have to contend with many expenses from equipment to transport fees to venues and facilities. However, there are many different ways to secure money. These include donations, fees from members, sponsorships, selling merchandise, selling tickets, organizing prize competitions, taking out loans and applying for grants. Once you have determined how you will secure your finances, find a good way to manage them, and for this, you can benefit from dedicated club membership software. Such software is  especially useful if you are collecting membership fees and would like to have all other essential data (such as stats, attendance, player information, and the like) in one single place.

Find your players

Of course, you need to find the right players for your sports club, and you can do this by spreading the word and asking friends, family members, and colleagues. You can also check out nearby schools if you are planning a youth club or retirement centres or homes if you are planning a club for older individuals. Place ads in the local newspaper and make use of forums and message boards on local blogs and websites as well. Good luck!
