ABARA FAMILY

Augustine (also spelled Agustin) Abara of Laoag, Ilocos Norte, came on the fourth voyage of the S. S. Maunawili, the steamer that brought the 6,000 Sakadas to the Territory of Hawai`i in 1946.  The ship arrived at Honolulu Harbor on June 11. [Index to Filipino Arrivals to Honolulu, 1946] HSPA records show that Augustine was assigned to Kaua`i Pineapple Company at Lawa`i on June 11 but his assignment was changed to Grove Farm Company on the same day.  He was subsequently assigned to Koloa Sugar Company from which he quit on September 7, 1946, and went to Hickam Field on O`ahu until July 21, 1949, when he returned to Koloa Plantation, then owned by Grove Farm Company.  His wife Mary, daughter Leonida (born February 20, 1945), and son Orlando (born October 1, 1946) were reunited with him at Koloa in 1949.  The family made their home at Spanish Camp.

The Abara siblings and their spouses are Leonida and James Cuaresma, Kapa`a; Orlando and Carol, `Oma`o; William and Rochelle, Koloa; Evangeline and Bob Cuaresma, Kapa`a. Evangeline’s twin, Evelyn (May 13, 1955 – August 9, 2009), married Allan Branco, and they were blessed with son Justin and daughter Kristin.  A resident of Kapa`a, she was with the Kaua`i Police Department as a fiscal officer.

Rudolpho (Rudy Ely) (April 26, 1950 – December 20, 2015) owned Rudy’s Pressure Washing Services at Lihu`e. Wife Juanita, sons Rubin and Ryan, all of Lihu`e; and daughter Jeanette and husband Shane Markham of Puhi, and his mother, Mary, who is a resident of Garden Island Health Care at this writing on March 13, 2016, survived Rudy.

Addendum:

Mary Basug Abara (September 9, 1927 – September 12, 2018) passed away at Wilcox Medical Center at age 91. She retired from the housekeeping department of The Waiohai at Po`ipu and was a produce clerk at Sueoka Store.  For her obituary, see the September 30, 2018, issue of The Garden Island.

TAROC/CASABAR FAMILY

Lorenzo Casabar, Kaua`i High School Class of 1958, now a resident of Waianae, O`ahu, wrote on June 1, 2017, that Sophie Silva’s parents were Manuel P. De Silva and Julia Aguiar Silva.

Lorenzo added that he is the oldest son of Cornelio Ringor Casabar, native of Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur, and Sophie Silva, and that he was born on October 1, 1940, at Koloa Hospital.  Lorenzo and his siblings, Katherine Elaine and  Cornelio Jr., lived with their mother and step-father, Emilio Taroc, in Korean Camp, in the neighborhood where Tanaka Store was located.  The Taroc Family lived next door to the Abara Family.

“I was raised by my Step-Dad,” Lorenzo wrote.

He added:  “ . . . it was such a joy and Blessing to have been born back then. The friends, family and growing up in a plantation environment was memorable. I wouldn’t trade it for all the modern toys they have now. No, I take that back, having cell phones back then would have been great instead of the old party lines.

“A lot of history and changes have been made in Koloa. The friends I met back then are still my good friends and that’s the way it was. We all share in our growing up at reunions and it means a lot to have lifetime friends. We all wish each other good health and to enjoy the life our Lord has blessed us with.

“Again, Thank you for addressing my concerns and I really appreciate it.”
