GOMITORI MUSING
for Vicki Hayashi Mukai
Most folks call it “dustpan.”
In plantation days, Otōsan Hayashi,
Who lived with his family
At Kukui`ula Plantation Camp,
Called it “gomitori.” — rubbish bird,
As recalled decades later by his daughter Vicki.
A metal dustpan paired with a broom:
An efficient way to scoop up dust and rubbish!
A unique and special bird of sorts!
Gomitori! Our past is part of our present;
Rightfully so. Thus, it follows:
Our present will be part of our future.
Connectivity, poetic is your line!
